Group Therapy
Talking therapy is when you talk to someone who is trained to help you cope with your negative thoughts and feelings. There are many types of talking therapy and you do not need to be diagnosed by a professional with an illness to benefit from talking therapy. This kind of therapy helps you determine what kinds of negative feelings you're experiencing and why. It also helps you develop strong coping mechanisms and other strategies to deal with this negative feelings in a healthy way. Group therapy is one kind of talking therapy.
Group therapy involves one or more psychologists who lead a group discussion about a set topic. Many groups meet about a certain topic, such as depression or eating disorders. It can be scary to get together with a group of strangers to talk about your feelings, but many people view group therapy as helpful. The group can be a support network and a place to have your thoughts heard. It's also a good way to reassure yourself that you're not struggling alone. To join group therapy, talk to your psychologist and/or doctor about what would be a good fit for you. Local hospitals and medical centers may sponsor a number of groups which are available for you to join. Some groups are open, which means that anyone can join at any time. Other groups are closed, which means all the members of the group are going through a program together and began at the same time. A lot of people find it to be helpful to participate in both group therapy and individual therapy. Again, talk to your doctor about which option is right for you.
